holy war: part V

Since first appearing on the scene in Mark’s Gospel, Jesus has been surrounded by mystery and controversy. Who is he? What is he trying to accomplish? Why does he say and do the things he does? The leaders oppose him. The people love him. But as soon as someone begins to suspect his real identity and agenda, he ducks out of sight and moves on to the next village or town.

In Part V of Mark’s Gospel (chapters 7-9), Jesus’ identity will finally be revealed. He is Heaven’s Champion, sent from God to tear down the strongholds of God’s enemies and bring light into dark places. Though his closest friends and followers fail to grasp his meaning, Jesus begins to tell them what will happen: he must suffer and die, then rise again. This is how God will win the war.
