QUARTERLY CHURCH
CONFERENCE REPORT

TABLE oF CONTENTS:

A LETTER FROM PASTOR JONATHAN

Dear Morningside Church Family,

I’m saddened today by the unexpected passing of my dear brother and fellow pastor, Wayne Gallups. And my grief is all the heavier knowing the impact his passing is having on my dear sister Carol and their family. As she shared with me this morning, they thought—we all thought—there would be more time.

Brother Wayne has been connected to Morningside in one way or another for many years. Until June of 2020, however, most of us knew him as Carol’s husband. Following his retirement as pastor of the church they planted together in Seale, Alabama, and in the throes of the Covid epidemic, Wayne graciously accepted my invitation to come and serve as our Minister to Senior Adults. I’ve had the privilege of getting to know him and Carol as they’ve served in ministry together these past few years. I am immensely grateful for the time we did have.

Wayne regularly shared with me feelings of frustration and guilt at how his condition prevented him from doing more for the church. Each time I would smile at his generosity of spirit and shake my head. I would remind him again that, since he wouldn’t accept a salary from the church, I wouldn’t accept any notions that he was letting me—or any of us—down! “It’s clear to me that God is using you to serve his people,” I would say, “but how you do so is between you and him.”

Wayne served Jesus first, and he did so to the very end. He knew, after all, that the end is really not the end at all. Wayne’s strivings may have ceased, and his sufferings as well, but his worship is just warming up. At his funeral we will likely sing his favorite hymn, “Rock of Ages.” I pray you’re encouraged by words that speak of promises Wayne held dear:

Rock of Ages, cleft for me
Let me hide myself in Thee
Let the water and the blood
From Thy wounded side which flowed
Be of sin the double cure
Save from wrath and make me pure

I will miss my friend and brother, Pastor Wayne, and I will grieve his passing. But I will do so standing firm in the hope that all God’s promises are “Yes and Amen!” in Christ.

Love in Christ,

Pastor Jonathan

But as surely as God is faithful, our message to you is not “Yes” and “No.” For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us—by me and Silas and Timothy—was not “Yes” and “No,” but in him it has always been “Yes.” For no matter how many promises God has made, they are “Yes” in Christ. And so through him the “Amen” is spoken by us to the glory of God. Now it is God who makes both us and you stand firm in Christ. He anointed us, set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.

Worship Team

These past few months have been a challenge for me personally, but God has been there with us every step of the way in this journey. He has surrounded us with an amazing church family. I am very grateful for my Morningside family. Thank you for being with us, being an extension of Jesus to us; we love you all. This worship ministry is full of people who are ready to step up when others are down. This is what God calls us to be, a loving family here for one another. To be Jesus to others in the middle of a storm, when all others would turn away, this family grows closer. This summer we have had some new faces join the team WELCOME! We are always looking to grow, if you want to be closer to the action, we would love to have you! If you are ready to serve on the worship team, worship choir, or tech team please reach out to me by phone or email. We would love to add new faces to our team.

Young Adult Ministry

The Young Adult Ministry hosted our first Backyard Bible Club, an extension of this year's Vacation Bible School: Kingdom Keepers! Working with our youth volunteers in the NextGen ministry, we helped the children make crafts as they learned about becoming a citizen of God's good kingdom. One child told his mom, "I love this. This is so much fun!" Huzzah!

The Young Adults also had a free car wash as part of our Family Fun Day in June as an outreach to our neighborhood.

Widows’ Ministry

In April, we had a salad luncheon and our speaker was Keith Sims. He gave us interesting information about the gardens of MercyMed. In May, we had grilled hamburgers with all the trimmings. Special thanks to Kinard Latham who grilled our burgers. Then we just enjoyed a time of fellowship. Our luncheon attendance has been in the 30's. June, July, and August are a summer break. We are looking forward to cranking up in September with interesting programs, good food, and our precious ladies!

Student Ministry

The student ministry has been busy this summer with weekly off-campus events. In June we enjoyed our day trip to Impact 360, our summer retreat at Brewton Parker College, and many students volunteered for Vacation Bible School. The month of July continues to be busy as well with plenty of ice cream trips, pool parties and our visit to Truist Park to watch a Braves Game. All of the events have been well attended and we look forward to our Fall kick-off on August 9th.

Fall Tutoring Program UpdatE

We are excited to share that we, in conjunction with Blanchard Elementary School, are finalizing details for our upcoming fall tutoring program which we anticipate to launching in mid-September or early October 2023 starting with eighteen students in K-2nd grade here on campus at Morningside! Through our various neighborhood events we have continued to receive feedback that tutoring is an area of great need for our neighborhood school-age children. As part of our church vision, we believe God has given us this opportunity to further serve our neighborhood and minister to our future generation through this worthwhile initiative. We encourage you to be in prayer for this exciting opportunity to further equip young minds as well as invite you to reach out to Christina Baptiste via email at PreschoolAdmin@morningsidebaptist.com if you would like to be part of this amazing opportunity to be a blessing to others!

connections ministry

During the second quarter, two Newcomer luncheons were hosted with 13 potential members in attendance. Many of these people have united with Morningside. A 5th Sunday fellowship for all adult Bible Fellowship groups was held in April where Pastor Jonathan laid out plans for our neighborhood outreach vision. The next 5th Sunday fellowship is July 30th when we will pack backpacks of donated school supplies for neighborhood elementary children. In partnership with the missions committee, Connections treated the teachers at Blanchard Elementary and Blackmon Road Middle schools during Teacher Appreciation Week. As part of our Partner in Education relationship, MBC hosted Blanchard’s awards night and Julie Ann attended Blackmon Road’s awards night. At both ceremonies, MBC was recognized for our partnership with these schools. We participated in the Baby Bottle Boomerang for Sound Choices Pregnancy Center with just over 110 baby bottles of change collected between Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. Our community outreach continues with a blood drive on Tuesday, July 25th. Connections joined with the Young Adult and NextGen ministries to sponsor a family fun day in June for neighborhood families. Our next neighborhood event is scheduled for September 9th.

Committee Reports

Personnel Committee

The Personnel Committee held its quarterly meeting on July 13th, 2023.

The committee reviewed job descriptions of Morningside staff in terms of roles and responsibilities, as some have shifted over the past year. We will continue to work on improving workflow and adjust as needed as we grow the expectations of serving those at Morningside and our surrounding community. Pastor Jonathan reported that several staff members are continuing to be coached and mentored to assist in their overall growth and development.
Pastor Jonathan also took the opportunity to share the vision of ministering to the Morningside neighborhood and how it might impact the staff as we begin to serve in these outreach capacities. These ministry areas will require higher expectations as will be needed with the beginning of the tutoring program. We ask that you join with us in keeping the staff in your prayers each day as they continue to serve Morningside and begin to pray about the work you can offer in these ministry areas to serve our community for Christ!

We also recognized Carol Gallups with a service award during this 2nd quarter. Carol reached a milestone anniversary celebrating 15 years of service at Morningside Baptist Church. Carol was honored on a Sunday morning with flowers, a plaque, and a monetary gift for her faithful and dedicated service. Please join with us to extend your heartfelt thanks and good wishes to Carol.

May God bless each one of you,

Teddie Ussery, Personnel committee chair

Global Missions

The Truth Spring 6th Avenue Project involved more than 40 members of MBC on two weekends in June 2023. Two homes were framed during the weekends. Additional volunteers provided the construction team with food and drink. Bob Jordan headed the project.

Cory German came to Columbus from Montenegro, and had an information session at Anne German's home on July 6th. Cory and Jessie are one of the two missionary groups supported in part by MBC.

Mark Graydon, global missions committee chair

Bereavement

The Bereavement Ministry was honored to provide a meal for the family prior to the memorial service for Carmen and Alan Massey. The meal was provided and served by Diane Padgett and her team on Saturday, July 1st.

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort,
who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.
